The Volkswagen Beetle is no stranger to off-roading – the old Baja Bug was quite the little dune buggy. The Dune Concept, unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, shows us a modern day version of that classic Baja Bug.
While the gold and black color scheme is certainly eye-catching, the Dune Concept seems to be designed with off-road capability in mind, featuring extra under body protection and bigger wheels. Under the hood, nothing is touched as this concept is based off the Beetle R-Line, and sports a 210-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Inside, the black and gold theme continues, but the Dune concept also features an AMOLED display which also shows drivers the pitch and roll of the vehicle – vital information for those planning on going off-road.
The coolest feature of the vehicle is its spoiler, which can double as a ski rack.
While VW says the concept has some potential to see production, it’s more likely that little accessories, like the AMOLED display or ski-rack/spoiler will actually land on customer vehicles. Overall, its refreshing to see the Dune Concept, as it’s a far cry from those kitchy 1970s themed Beetle Convertibles.
